Manila Waldorf School

The Philippines

In April 2025, I was invited to give a workshop on middle school physics and chemistry to Waldorf teachers from all over the Philippines. We gathered at the Manila Waldorf School to explore science teaching and the development of the middle school child, ending the day with rousing, traditional folk dancing.

Having this kind of training is a great help in my teaching and boosts my enthusiasm for teaching physics in class 6.  I am fortunate to have met a mentor who has made me understand and love physics and chemistry better. The training made me realize that teachers have a great impact on the lifelong learning of students and so I am eager to impart what I've learned in the training to them. I want them to realize that learning physics is fun and not a burden on their learning journey, because I too found physics and chemistry tough during my student days. In this training, I saw how important real-life, experience-based learning is. It doesn't just touch the cognitive potential of the child but also the feeling realm that makes the child realize how human beings and the world work together.

The Science Workshop conducted by our mentor, Laurence, was very helpful indeed. The outline of her discussions was very organized and was delivered with clarity. The experiments conducted were quite simple to follow and replicate, yet straightforward and substantial to the curriculum content. For someone who is not naturally inclined to science as I am (I am more of a Math person), I feel that I have gained enough confidence to be able to conduct the blocks presented on my own. It was empowering for new and experienced teachers alike. Plus, I like Laurence's teacher's demeanor, there is just enough gentleness and authority necessary to keep the class engaged.

During our one-week training, I felt incredibly grateful that our mentor clearly outlined the topics we should cover at each grade level and demonstrated experiments to do in class. That, for me, was the most valuable part of the training. Watching her perform the experiments gave us a clearer picture of the tools and materials we’d need, along with the alternatives that we tried to ensure success. Throughout the training, Laurence really embodied the role of a teacher. It brought me back to my own classroom experiences. Her reminders about structure, her explanations of each experiment’s purpose, and her practical advice created an authentic classroom atmosphere. Her message—that we’re not there to entertain but to guide students through meaningful experiences—helped us stay grounded. Most importantly, the training reminded me of *why* we teach these blocks: to inspire a sense of wonder and to cultivate the power of observation.

The science workshop was given in easy-to-digest portions but powerful enough to fuel curiosity and inspire teachers with new  ideas for making Physics and Chemistry lessons more engaging in class. These easily digestible portions, however, presented a good challenge in terms of the skills taught to the teachers. This breakdown of complex concepts into manageable portions made it easier for me to grasp the depth and purpose behind each lesson. Maraming salamat!

Laurence was an incredible and insightful mentor during the teacher training, offering practical and valuable content and empowering us teachers to take on the Physics and Chemistry blocks in the middle grades. She is generous with her energy, resources, and ideas to provide a better context and give a clearer picture why we teach the specific lessons in each grade level. I also like how the experiments are not intimidating to conduct, yet they already help us understand the concepts clearly and address the competencies students need to develop. I enjoyed being a student of her class, and now I have a better perspective of the students as we conducted the experiments ourselves with our fellow teachers and solved the problems together.

Our experiment sessions with Teacher Laurence was a blast! She demonstrated experiments that are fascinating yet practical. As an incoming Class 7 teacher who is new to Waldorf, I have gathered invaluable advice for my blocks that I will definitely use in the future.
